ABOUT DARRIEN

I am Darrien Camarillo from Lummi Island, Washington, a small community with a population of approximately 900. I have been playing basketball since preschool, participating in my older sisters Boys and Girls Club teams. These teams were coached by my Dad. We often didn’t have enough girls to form a team, so I played two to three years up. This challenged and forced me to become a tough defender due to my age and size disadvantage. The Lummi Island community has been very supportive in my passion for basketball. At any of my local games I look up into the stands and will find a group of islanders cheering me on.

I started playing AAU basketball in 5th grade, when I joined the Bellingham Regulators 6th grade girls team, coached by Don Cook. In 6th and 7th grade I played for the Ferndale Girls Basketball Association, coached by Rick Nicolaas. At this time I started attending Hoopstar training with Tyler and Kyle Coston. Through Hoopstar I met my coach Cara Childress, I have played for Hoopstar and Cara since my 7th grade summer. This year as a freshman, I was grateful to be asked to join Ferndale High School’s varsity basketball team coached by Mike Ivy and Larry Honeycutt. We had a successful season making it to regionals, but not quite to the state tournament. Last summer I attended Point Guard College, this was an amazing experience and I plan to attend yearly.

This past season I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to assist Cara Childress with coaching the Hoopstar 5th grade girls teams. This experience helped me to better understand the game and introduced me to the love of coaching. In the future I hope to play basketball at a collegiate level. I want to major in Sports Medicine, so that I can work with athletes as an athletic trainer and coach. Currently I am in the Sports Medicine program at Ferndale High School. I am learning a lot and enjoy working with athletes.

I am excited to be beginning another Hoopstar season; to continue to work with the Hoopstar coaches and trainers, and especially to play with my Hoopstar family again.
